The pelican is a large water bird with a very long beak. It swallows up to around 10 % of its own body weight each day. In comparison, a grown man would have to eat a good eight kilogrammes. They are characterised by a long beak and a large throat pouch used for catching prey and draining water from the scooped-up contents before swallowing.
